No deadlines?| Posted By Karo Christina KumarBIO Total 2 posts | April 7th, 2008 |
That’s music to my ears - literally! While most of us spend life following deadlines, it’s amazing that Calcutta nightlife doesn’t have one. A big advantage, that. While party animals and night owls step out at 9pm in other cities (case in point, Bangalore), the clubs here don’t get steamy before 11pm. There isn’t much sense in making it to a club before that, unless you have your eye on that cute bartender!
There are the “younger” nightclubs like Kix at City Centre that start early, for the young ones who can always pass off a 9pm retreat to home as “Mom, I was at an extra class of tuition”, or “Sorry, the traffic back from the movie sucked”. But the good times only get better when it’s closer to midnight.
At Venom on Camac Street, 11pm is a good time to drop in. The dance floor won’t exactly be jammed but at least you’ll manage a seat someplace. The same goes for Roxy at The Park. However, the action at Shisha at 22 Camac Street doesn’t take off before 11.30, that’s also when they open the rear half of the nightclub and you feel the change almost like quicksand, as the crowd suddenly slips away and there’s suddenly more air (less smoke actually, although I’m not too sure if there can ever be less smoke at a nightclub – for the sake of not making enemies out of puff-happy clubbers, we’ll save that for another blog) to breathe in. At Underground, the party begins fairly early, 11 is a good time to head there too. Dublin (who goes there anymore?) I’d give a try, only if I’m in the mood for talk over tipple and at Tantra, you’d find a fair share of clubbers, even at 10.30pm.
That gives the regular party-goer an average of a good four hours, if you’d like to call it a day at 3am. And that’s more then you’ll ever get at any other city’s night scene!
I’d say make hay while the sun shines. It won’t be long before authorities play spoilsport. Till then, no one’s complaining!

responded:Hi,
Though m born and brought up at Kolkata, the essence of night life came to me when I came to Pune for job(Obvious reason is that, till date nightlife is considered to be a stigma of bad life style in middle class!!! I agree to this up to a certain extent, as that age required a lot of monitoring.). Hence whenever my friends asked about night life of Kolkata, I used to murmur about Tantra, and few other places. This Blog is good to go through, to keep a strong impression about the night life of Kolkata. Will certainly visit these places whenever I visit Kolkata. Thanks for the nice, elaborate and precise insight.

In simple sentence I’ll fervently hope Kolkata remains as Kolkata - everybody’s city. I’ll continue to pray living seas away, that Kolkta never acquires even a bit of Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore or any other deadly cities in India. I lived in all of these. I wish I were there to do my part of duty instead of extending just lip-service.

Nice to see this article and it reminds me my experience in one of the night club in Kolkata. I went to kolkata (my home city) after a long time for a vacation and to spend some time with relatives ad friends. I planned a visit to one of the night club (not mentioning any name) with my wife to just have an experience of kolkata night life. Initially it seems fine and we started enjoying music and light and specially different people of my own city which I left long ago. We were having good times as we started having light dance after a little drink. But soon after that we realized that we are being watched and talked about. There were some (do not want to mention here) unpleasant remarks thrown at us. I realized that, they are mocking us as they understood we are NRIs and from USA (probably overheared from our conversation). They were mocking us, teasing us and also passed many shabby comments to my wife. I was totaly taken aback and could not figure out what could be the problem there. Then some young guys surronded us and made us very uncomfortable. I felt insecured in my own city where I spent my childhood. My wife and me are a regular visitor in night clubs in here (LA) and never experienced such a humiliating and scary situation. I am happy that I still love my city but namaskar to night club from distance.
