Riding the Supersonics wave
By Barsali Bhattacharyya
The music that wowed the Princeton Club crowd on Friday evening was well above the customary because setting the stage ablaze was the Supersonics! The four young rockers had just returned home after their performance in Mumbai and set the home-crowd cheering for them once again.
ILK caught up with the Supersonics before their gig in Kolkata. Here are excerpts from the conversation that followed...

Who are they?Ananda, Rohan, Avinash and Nitin have been into music since school. Ananda, Avinash and Nitin were playing together in a band called Soundcheck, and the Supersonics came into being in 2006.
Their forteProud of not being just another cover band, the Supersonics’ USP lies in their original songs. As for their music, it’s rock and roll all the way. They believe that their songs work, primarily because they are a confluence of their individual tastes.
On performing in MumbaiThe Supersonics observe that the western music culture in Mumbai is much more open than that in Kolkata. Original songs are easily appreciated by the Mumbai audience, which is where Kolkata has been lagging behind. Moreover, the large number of venues in Mumbai spells optimum exposure for any band.
The western music scenario in KolkataThat’s changing for sure, according to the Supersonics. When they started, 20 or 30 gigs were all that they managed in a year. But over the past few months, the band has already crossed that number. The audience is also becoming more receptive towards original compositions. However, the dearth of venues is a persistent problem. Nevertheless, things are improving.
In the futureThe Supersonics plan to bring out their own album as soon as possible. With enough songs for at least four albums, the band has set the wheels rolling by contacting a few record companies. However, they also rue the fact that there are very few good production companies in Kolkata willing to record rock albums. In fact, only a handful of the city’s western music bands have been successful in recording albums. They are confident that an album alone will take their music to a greater audience.
