  • 1829 "Satidaho" is banned by General Bentinck.
  • 1828 The Sahid Minar which was formerly called the Octorloney Monument is built.
  • 1827 The Bengal Club is founded.
  • 1818 First Bengali Magazine, "Digdarshan", is published from Sreerampur.

  • 1775 Nandakumar, a local landlord, gets hung in a false allegation.
  • 1772 Calcutta becomes the capital of British India as the first Governor General, Warren Hastings, transfers all important offices to the city from Murshidabad.
  • 1770 The Infamous famine strikes Bengal.
  • 1765 Robert Clive receives the Diwani of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa from Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II to collect the revenues of these three areas.
  • 1757 The first currency bill is printed in the Calcutta mint.
  • 1757 23rd June, the English East India Company defeats Siraj-Ud-Daulah at the Battle of Plassey.
  • 1756 Siraj-ud-Daulah attacks Calcutta and conquers it. The infamous Black Hole incident allegedly takes places.
  • 1727 The city corporation is established and Hallwell becomes the first mayor of Calcutta.
  • 1710 Officials of the East India Company begin to refer to Fort William in Calcutta.
  • 1698 East India Company buys three villages (Sutanuti, Kolikata and Gobindapur) from the local landlord Sabarna Chowdhury.
  • 1693 Job Charnock passes away.
  • 1690 Job Charnock, a factor of the East India Company flees from Hooghly and settles in Calcutta.
