Kolkata History In Chronological Order
1690 Job Charnock, an agent of East India Company settles in Calcutta.

1693 Job Charnock passes away.
1698 East India Co. buys three villages (Sutanuti, Kolikata and Gobindapur) from the local landlord Sabarna Chowdhury.
1699 East India Company starts developing Calcutta as a Presidency city.
1707 Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb dies.
1717 The Mughal emperor Farrukh-siyar grants the East India Company the freedom of trade in return for a yearly payment of 3,000 rupees.
1727 The city corporation is established and Hallwell becomes the first mayor Calcutta.
1756 Siraj-ud-daulla attacks Calcutta and conquers it. The infamous Black Hole incident takes placet.
1757 23rd June, the British East India Company defeats Siraj-id-daulla at the Battle of Plassey .
1765 Robert Clive annexes Bengal, Bihar and Orissa from Badsha Alam II with an agreement of paying excises.
1757 The first currency bill is printed in the Calcutta mint.
1770 The Infamous famine strikes Bengal.
1772 Calcutta becomes the capital of British India as the first Governor General, Warren Hastings, transfers all important offices to the city from Murshidabad.
1779 James Hicky establishes a printing press and publishes the first news paper, "The Bengal Gazzette".
1775 Nandakumar, a local landlord, gets hung in a false allegation.
1784 The Asiatic Society is established.
1804 The Governor House, now called the Raj Bhavan, is built.
1813 The Town Hall is built.

1929 Agnes Goinxha Bejaxhiu, fondly called Mother Teresa, comes to Calcutta and joins the Bengal Loreto Mission.

1971 The India-Pakistan war on freedom of Bangladesh affects the city.
1975 First TV transmission starts in the city from August 9th.

1979 Mother Teresa is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
1984 Metro Railways, the first underground railway in India, starts from Tollygunge to Esplanade.

1989 France's highest civilian award, Legion d'Honour is conferred upon Satyajit Ray by President F. Mitterrand in Calcutta.
1992 Satyajit Ray, film director, receives the prestigious "Life Time Achievement" Oscar award and "Bharat Ratna" just before his demise.
