The Digha Beach, about 187 kms from Kolkata has lured tourist for years. The flat hard beach, and the calm and shallow level for almost a mile into the water during low tide makes it a favourite with those who like wallowing for hours in the water.
Embellished with disciplined casaurina plantation, the beach offers shade to those who want to avoid the sun while sitting on the beach.
Though the main beach is now guarded with boulders to prevent erosion, making it practically unaccessible to swimmers, a new beach more to the south west has replaced it in style.
New Digha has a boating complex, with varied options from Kayakes to motor boats.
The Lankeswari Temple (14 km) and Kapal Kundala Temple (45 km) famous for an ancient temple associated with Bankimchandra's novel Kapal Kundala, near Contai are two local attractions along with the curios made of sea-shells.
How to get there:
There is a frequent, Kolkata-Digha bus service from morning to evening. Its a four hour drive from Kolkata.
There are direct trains to the Digha Station from Shalimar.
One can also avail buses or hire taxis from Kharagpur which has a strong railway network.
The nearest airport is the NSC Bose Airport (Kolkata).
