A significant contributor to Kolkata’s ‘natural’ beauty, right in the heart of the city, next to the Maidan is the Racecourse, maintained by the Royal Calcutta Turf Club. One of the largest race courses in the country, it was built in the year 1820 (the Turf Club, however, was established some years later in 1847), and is home to major racing and polo events like the Queen Elizabeth Cup and the Calcutta Derby. The Calcutta Derby was the Derby in the subcontinent.
The flower gardens in the property are known to be very well maintained, and are therefore worth a visit.
Races take place in two sessions, starting in the month of July and continuing till September; then again in November and concluding in March. Generally held on Saturdays, they are also held on important holidays and some special occasions.Website: www.rctconline.com
