Metro Railway, Kolkata is the first underground Metro Railway in India. The Kolkata Metro Railway was constructed progressively from 1972 to 1995.
The Kolkata Metro Rail which runs on a 750 volt DC, are manually driven. Each train has eight coaches and can carry around 2,460 passengers. With respect to power supply, Metro gets priority next to Defence. However, in case of a power failure, sufficient arrangements for emergency lighting are made to provide the minimum light requirements inside the tunnels and at the stations.

In order to ensure the safety and comfort of passengers, the trains are provided with adequate fire-fighting measures. To prevent accidents and collisions, a Continuous Automatic Train Control System is maintained. Direct Radio communication facility exists between the drivers and control rooms. Moreover, all stations are provided with closed circuit television cameras for security.

To prevent water from entering the tunnels and stations during heavy rains or flooding, the main entrances of all stations have been constructed at an elevation considerably higher than the highest recorded flood level. Pumps have also been installed to remove water in case of any seepage.
