For ages, Rabindra Sarovar, popularly known as the Dhakuria Lake, has been Kolkata’s favorite hangout for morning walkers, poets, painters and lovers. Visions of lovers sitting together in the afternoon hand in hand, cricketers playing cricket, kids playing football barefoot, guitarists strumming under trees, painters painting sunrise and sunset, photographers clicking pictures of the vermilion dawn or a lonesome pensive sitting in recluse starring at the sky have become associated with a beatnik picture of Kolkata. Rabindra Sarovar is to Kolkata, what Washington Square Park is to New York City..
Birds of different sub species audibly embellish the ambience with a strange cacophony. Sounds like a Van Gogh! Wait till you walk into the Monastery and discover a different Kolkata. The construction is a sublime entity just outside the Iron Gate towards Dhakuria. In the morning, when the sky is beaming red, the cool water of the lake baskes in the morning sun. This is when one runs into people of all ages, experiencing the freshness of the air, during their regular morning walk. Boats cut across the water, with boating enthusiasts from the Calcutta Rowing club or the Bengal Rowing Club engaging in their early morning practice sessions.
In the evenings, friends meet here. The different small fields offer great location for friends playing football or cricket. The Anderson Club is a premier swimming institute of the city. Young boys and girls are often seen with wet hair walking around the area before they go back home after their afternoon sessions in the water
As the sun sets, the chirping of birds stop, a somber silence starts reigning. As you walk around, you run into people sipping tea and engaging in their regular evening adda. On the opposite foot, you find the Lake Kali Bari, which is a shrine with the Goddess Kali, drawing a large number of devotees everyday. The puchkas and bhelpuri at Vivekananda Park attract gourmets.
There is a smaller water resource called the Padmapukur, which dresses up in lotus plants and water lilies through the year. The verdent and the peaceful Rabindra Sarovar Lake is definitely worth a visit if one is in Kolkata.
