For those interested in getting an authentic feel of the colonial past of Kolkata, a walk within the old South Park Street Cemetery is recommended. Built in the year 1767, it is home to the graves of numerous famed personalities like Michael Madhusudan Dutta, Henry Vivian Louis Derozio, Governor-General Charles Stuart, Lt. Col. Robert Kyd (founder of the Botanical Gardens), and the sons of Charles Dickens and Captain Cook, amongst others. As a result of the wide range of people buried here, the tombs built in their honour also vary in design and general style, ranging from pyramids to Hindu-styled tombs.
Now in the heart of the city, the South Park Street Cemetery when constructed was considered to be in the city’s suburbs. But even now, it has an almost eerie calmness feel to it (accentuated by the occasional shrills of crows), providing an almost first-hand account of the city’s colonial past.
