A very popular destination on Christmas, St. Paul’s Cathedral is the largest Anglican Church in the city, and the first Episcopal Church of the Orient. Built in the year 1847, the cathedral was initiated by Bishop Wilson, and designed by a military engineer Major Forbes, assisted by C. K. Robinson. It was originally built in the Gothic Revival Style with a fusion of stained glass windows and frescoes in the style of the Florentine Renaissance. However, due to an earthquake in 1934, the cathedral’s tower was rebuilt, this time being modeled on the Bell Harry Tower in Canterbury Cathedral.
Images from the life of St. Paul are beautifully painted as murals; and the coffin of Bishop Wilson lies here in an underground chamber.
There is a meditation place on the grounds, set up in collaboration with distinguished citizens from
Rabindranath Tagore’s Shantiniketan.
