Rehmat Ali is the tale of a hardened criminal who eventually reforms. Rehmat Ali (Mithun Chakraborty), an orphan, was raised by his godfather Abbaji. As he grows up, Rehmat becomes Abbaji’s right hand man, unafraid to threaten, extort, intimidate or use violence at the latter’s behest.

Abbaji is a supporter of a minister, Lokhikant Rai, who is being threatened by opposition leader Shahilal. In the battle of the political bigwigs, a Mr. Mukherjee becomes the victim of a false corruption charge. An exceptionally upright man, Mukherjee now loses his job, falling prey to these dire circumstances.

In the meanwhile, Rehmat rescues bar dancer Sapna (Rituparna Sengupta) from the clutches of Shashilal’s brothers. The two fall in love, but tragedy tears them apart, with Sapna perishing in a car blast. A devastated Rehmat now seeks to atone for his past sins by covertly protecting Mukherjee and his family from a corrupt cop bent on destroying them.

Rehmat now moves in with the Mukherjees despite Mrs. Mukherjee’s resistance to having a Muslim live in their staunch Brahmin home. What follows is an emotional journey where good triumphs over evil.
