Ageing actress Mrinalini (Aparna Sen) writes her suicide note. The first lesson she had learnt as a performer was timing – the perfect moment to enter or exit the stage. She had no control over her entry on the stage of her life, but she wanted to choose the exit.

She has readied the pills that will put her to sleep forever. But before taking them, she must destroy all her memorabilia – letters, photographs, and newspaper cuttings, anything connected to her past – lest they fall into the hands of the press. In the media limelight all her life, Mrinalini wishes to be spared the attention at her death.

She looks through an old box that contains relics from her past and memories flood the night. Incidents she had nearly forgotten return to haunt her. Through these memories, Mrinalini’s life is revealed – a life of loves lost and gained, of friendships and betrayals, successes and failures, accidents and awards, agonies and ecstasies.

As Mrinalini relives her past, night turns to dawn. Early morning light fills the room. The moment has passed. The death Mrinalini had wished for so intensely no longer seems a priority. Her dog rubs its head on its mistress’ feet and whines to be let out. Mrinalini smiles. She tears up the suicide note and takes her dog for a walk. It’s the start of a new day. She has chosen a new beginning.
