Independence means...

Posted On :14/08/2010
On the eve of India's 64th Independence Day, we asked Kolkatans what the day meant to them. Here's what some of them had to say.

Rituparna Sengupta, actor: I believe a true celebration is one that comes from your heart. We owe our independence to the brave freedom fighters. They are the real heroes and I salute them for their immense sacrifice.

Lopamudra Mitra, singer: We celebrate our Independence Day like a festival and that makes me angry. To me, it is essential to know the history and the value of this day rather than treat it like a holiday.

Aniruddha Roy Choudhury, filmmaker: Independence Day fills me with a sense of pride and a feeling of happiness. But I think we have a long way to go. The day we can guarantee dignity of life to every citizen is the day we will be truly independent.

Agnimitra Paul, designer: Each Independence Day, I watch the ceremonies on TV. It's a special day when I spend time with my son and watch Richard Attenborough's Gandhi together. I do it to inculcate in him a feeling of pride for our country.

Arin Paul, filmmaker:  I believe the essence of the Independence Day is missing. We celebrate it like any other holiday, which is wrong. We must celebrate our independence everyday, not just on one day of the year.

Mallika Guha, MBA aspirant: Independence Day awakens the gratitude I have towards our freedom fighters. Thanks to their sacrifices, I can live life the way I want to. I feel lucky to be a girl child born in free India and enjoying all possible liberties.

Mr. Rawat, Princeton Club: This day means a lot to me but we don’t celebrate it any particular way. I usually just enjoy the day with family in a quiet way.

Debanjan Ghosh, independent filmmaker: Independence Day is special. I feel united with my country people and a great sense of respect for the freedom that we have.
