As many as three incidents of snatching were reported in the past 24 hours, the last one leaving a private firm poorer by Rs 63,000 on Thursday afternoon.
None was arrested in connection with the snatchings till late on Thursday.
Samar Dey, who works for an electronic goods distribution firm, was returning to his Garcha Road office when two bike-borne youths allegedly snatched a bag containing Rs 63,000 from him at Gariahat around 1.30pm.
Police said Dey’s employers had sent him to withdraw the money from the Gol Park branch of a private bank. The money was to be used for paying salaries.
The 44-year-old lodged a police complaint stating that he was walking down Gariahat Road when the youths snatched the bag from him in front of Ballygunge New Market, a stone’s throw from Gariahat police station.
“Dey said he could not see the duo’s faces as they were wearing helmets,” said a senior officer of Gariahat police station.
“The man (Dey) ran after the duo but they sped off,” said Ananda Bagh, who witnessed the snatching from his roadside tea stall.
In another incident, a gang snatched a woman’s gold chain while she was walking down a road in New Alipore’s N Block on Wednesday evening. Earlier in the day, two youths came riding a motorcycle and snatched Rs 1 lakh from Prabir Ganguly minutes after he had stepped out of a private bank in Phoolbagan.
