| Drowning glory | |
| A walk through North Kolkata’s waterlogged streets gives a better picture of our dear, dirty city’s defunct sewerage system. The situation is only going to get worse, with the met office predicting a continual downpour for the next 48 hours. The only relief has been a fall in the mercury level, but the repugnant sight of streets drowned in muddy water washing in filth and sewerage from the uncovered drains and open garbage vats easily outdoes that feel. | |

| Drudging on | |
| If you walk down the city by-lanes and watch around, you can’t possibly give the hand-pulled rickshaws a miss. They are more than a century old and were initially imported from China. The state administration banned them more than a year back, triggering a court case on which Kolkata High Court has not ruled yet. So the rickshaw-pullers are still drudging on the city.
