Communists’ protest campaign against UPA
Former Communists allies of the Congress led UPA government met Mayawati and other leaders of the third front to strategize a nationwide campaign against the government. The leaders decided that their protest campaign would include issues like inflation and farmers’ suicide apart from the nuclear deal. Meanwhile, BJP activists went on a protest march in Mumbai against a party member who cross-voted for the Congress.

Sensex goes up post UPA win
A day after the Congress led UPA government won the trust vote in Parliament; shares extended their rise to about 6 percent on Wednesday. Banking stocks were in demand followed by realty and power stocks. The Bombay Stock Exchange's Sensex opened with a positive gap of around 465 points at 14,568.22. It very nearly sailed past the 15,000 mark, but hit a high of 14,979.90 in afternoon trade and ended with a thumping gain of 838.08 points or 5.94 percent at 14,942.28.

CPI-M expels Somnath Chatterjee
The CPI-M politburo expelled Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee from the party after a meeting on Wednesday. The politburo took the decision following Chatterjee's defiance of not quitting the post of Lok Sabha Speaker after the Left parties withdrew their support to the UPA government. Chatterjee who was a member of the CPM central committee presided over the special session of Parliament in defiance of CPM General Secretary Prakash Karat.

City’s pedestrian traffic: a complete chaos
Scene: Jadavpur 8B Bus Stand. Time: Peak hours of the day. Situation: Pedestrians cock a snook at traffic rules at the expense of risking their lives.

Unruly pedestrians are an old problem of the city. Kolkata requires more road safety campaigns to educate pedestrians about traffic rules. Ironically enough, it takes many law-abiding citizens almost ten minutes to cross a mere 50-metre stretch, thanks to the thousands of vehicles that do not bother to give right-of-way to pedestrians. CNG or katatel: The autodriver’s dilemma
The High Court has given its verdict on the clean-air notification recently. It has asked to replace all commercial vehicles that are 15 years and older by March 31 next year and converting autorickshaws to LPG or CNG-compliant engines.
