'2+2 dialogue' between India, Japan
A week after the first round of civil nuclear negotiations in Tokyo, India and Japan on Tuesday commenced senior official-level talks in New Delhi to enhance defence and foreign ties. During the "2+2 dialogue", foreign secretary Nirupama Rao and defence secretary Pradeep Kumar initiated discussions on a host of strategic and defence issues with Japan's deputy foreign minister Kenichiro Sasae and vice minister for defence, Kimito Nakae.

Pillai rules out deployment of Army
Home secretary GK Pillai, during his three-day visit to Chhattisgarh, said, on Monday, that the government had decided not to deploy the Army for counter-insurgency operations in the state. 'Bandh' paralyses Kolkata
Normal life was thrown out of gear in the city today as air, rail and road services were disrupted due to the Bharat 'bandh' called by Left and BJP-led NDA to protest hike in fuel prices. Private airlines shut down operations in the wake of the strike and long-distance train services were hit as many trains were stopped at various stations. Roads wore a deserted look in the absence of any traffic, and shops and most of the markets were closed.

BJP demands referendum on price hike

Pawar takes over as ICC boss
Former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chief Sharad Pawar took over as International Cricket Council (ICC) president succeeding David Morgan. Pawar, who is the second Indian after Jagmohan Dalmiya to occupy the ICC top post, was given the charge during the annual conference week of the world cricket body. Dalmiya was the first Indian to be elected to the president's post in 1997.

Anuj Sharma, deputy inspector general of police, CID, on Wednesday, confirmed the arrest of five Maoists, including one who played a key role in the Nandigram agitation. The Maoists, also including a state committee member and a zonal committee leader, were arrested from the southern outskirts of the city.
