Fuel price hike |
| The Empowered Group of Ministers who met in New Delhi on Friday decided to free petrol prices from state control and raised the prices of diesel, LPG and kerosene. Petrol price have now been raised by Rs 3 per litre, diesel by Rs 2, kerosene by Rs 3 per litre and LPG by Rs 35. Petrol prices have been raised by Rs 3.65 a litre in Kolkata and will henceforth be market-determined. |

India, Pak must jointly tackle militancy: Rao |
| After her meeting with Pakistan foreign secretary Salman Bashir in Islamabad on Thursday, Indian foreign secretary Nirupama Rao stated at a press conference that New Delhi and Islamabad must work jointly to tackle militancy and not give militants any opportunity to derail the peace process. Rao also said that the talks were marked by 'a great deal of cordiality, sincerity and earnestness' that will pave the way for more comprehensive dialogue.

| A court at Saraikela in Jamshedpur granted the CBI a day's transit remand and directed that Bapi Mahato and his cousin Bimal Mahato, accused in the Jnaneswari Express tragedy, be produced before the court of the additional chief judicial magistrate at Jhargram by 23 June. The accused were charged under Section 150 (maliciously wrecking or attempting to wreck train) and Section 151 (damage or destruction of certain railway properties) of the Railway Act. |
