Putin arrives in India, big deals expected |
| Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, who is on a two-day visit to India, arrived in New Delhi, on Friday. Russia and India are expected to sign over a dozen deals worth $10 billion and also finalise policies on the way forward on Afghanistan. BJP opposes job quotas on religious grounds |
| BJP on Thursday slammed the ruling Congress for plans to extend quotas to deprived classes in jobs and educational institutes to minorities including those converted. The quotas have been recommended by the National Commission for Religious and Linguistic Minorities, also known as Justice Ranganath Misra Commission. Calling the move communalisation of development, Leader of opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj aggressively opposed the proposed decision of the Union Government. |

| The Banga Sanskriti Utsav, a cultural event organised by the West Bengal government, was inaugurated this week by Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee. Interestingly, some intellectuals including thespian Bibhash Chakraborty and singer Pallab Kirtaniya – who earlier adopted a pro-change stance and shirked all state-sponsored functions following the Nandigram fiasco – have decided to participate in the festival. These intellectuals assert that participating in any event is their right as citizens even if they oppose the state politically. However, their participation in the Banga Sanskriti Utsav could indicate a rift in the Paribartan Chai brigade. |

Ford India rolls out Figo |
| Ford India launched its much-awaited compact car, Figo, at the Taj Hotel in New Delhi, on Tuesday. The car was launched in both diesel and petrol versions. Priced at Rs 3,49,000, the diesel version has a 1.4-litre engine, while the petrol version worth Rs. 4,42,000 has a 1.2-litre engine. The car would give a mileage of 15.6 kilometres and 20 kilometres a litre in the petrol and diesel versions, respectively. |
