PDP welcomes PM's initiative for Kashmir peace |

PM Manmohan Singh's fresh initiative to address the escalating violence in the Kashmir Valley was welcomed by PDP chief, Mehbooba Mufti. Mufti stated that political dialogue is necessary for the restoration of peace. Over 1 crore sanctioned for Orissa flood relief |
| Flash floods caused by torrential rains have thrown life out of gear in Orissa’s Kalahandi district. The flood submerged residential and agricultural lands and has rendered thousands homeless. S. N Patra, Orissa's Revenue and Disaster Management Minister, announced the sanction of over Rs. 1 crore for relief work.

Purifying Ganges: Kolkata’s Ganga Mission |
| Members of the Ganga Mission took out a rally on Sunday with the collective mission of creating awareness on preserving the Ganges. Leading the procession was Shyamal Sen, President of Ganga Mission. Sen believes that the purity of the river is vital for the environment and public health of India. The organisation was formed to check pollution levels of the river which locals know as Hooghly.

Kumartuli: On the threshold of change |
| Kumartuli can now have a permanent address. The legal tussle relating to tenancy has been cleared with Land and land reforms minister Abdur Razzak Mollah signing relevant documents. Expressing his happiness over the new development, urban development minister Asok Bhattacharya said Kumartuli’s new structure will come up soon. “We had wanted to bring up the permanent structure of Kumartuli before the Pujas, but it’s not possible. We are sorry for that....we will try and complete it as soon as possible”, he said. The pace of work is picking up in Kumartuli before the Pujas. With artisans busy making the structures, this development brings new hope for them. Watch video. |

Armed dacoits rob train in Bihar |
| At least thirteen people, including a Government Railway Police (GRP) jawan, were injured when over 50-armed dacoits stormed into the Howrah Delhi Lal Quila Express in Bihar and robbed the passengers at gunpoint. The gang of 40 robbed and thrashed passengers in four compartments, including an AC coach in Bihar’s Lakhisarai district after stopping the train from Kolkata’s Chitpur at 4.18am. |
