| Amarnath Yatra: A Himalayan journey | |
| Each year, thousands of pilgrims undertake the Amarnath Yatra, a journey to a Himalayan cave shrine located at an altitude of 13500 ft. The cave in a narrow gorge at the farther end of Lidder valley houses an ice formation in the shape of a phallus, symbolizing its link to Lord Shiva. Pilgrims trek across treacherous mountains, glacier-fed lakes and frozen passes to reach the cave shrine. A number of people also voluntarily engage in community service, providing the pilgrims with refreshments along the way. | |
